COMMITTEES
Empire State Games – Rick Costanza reported that
there will no longer be a Nordic Ski Hotline for Empire State Games
qualifiers. Last minute changes and cancellations will all be posted on
the wed site www.nyssranordic.com.
Cross Country – Larry Wilkinson noted that race organizers can more
easily find anything they need on the race organizer’s page on the web
site. At Empire State Games masters will be age 40 or above. Open will
be age 20 and up and masters may elect to ski in the open class. Race
organizers can no longer accept NYSSRA Nordic memberships on race day.
Race organizers must get their results in to Larry Wilkinson within 24
hours. Each race site should have an information board with start list,
event times, results, course map, jury, race officials, and how to
activate EMS.. Larry Wilkinson pointed out the preliminary schedule for
the 2005/2006 season. Sanctions will be required prior to the spring
meeting.
Eastern High School Championships will be March 18 – 20 at Bolton
Valley. We can have as many as 20 male and 20 female. In the past we
have been lucky to get 14 of each. Trip leader will be Pete Leonard. Lee
Mahood moved; Jan Sibilia second that we provide $250 seed money for the
trip; carried.
Ski Orienteering – Phil Hawkes-Teeter pointed out that there’s an "A"
meet coming up co-hosted by CNYO and EMPO on October 30 (Gilbert Lake)
and October 31 (Thacher Park). At Empire State Games there will be
scholastic, open, masters and a "grand" masters class. There has been a
suggestion that there be a early season ski O clinic similar to the
biathlon clinics.
Biathlon – Those present congratulated Bill Lilly on being named
interim President of USBA and wished him luck. Tom Moffet has been named
interim chairman of NYSSRA’s Biathlon Committee. Friday’s event at the
Empire State Winter Games will be a sprint format. Tom and Marque Moffet
will host a reception Saturday evening. Bill Lilly noted that on-line
registration for ESGs went well last season. We will have waivers at the
event site this coming season. This will be the 25th
anniversary of the Empire State Games every effort will be made to
recognize those who have participated and volunteered over the years.
The summer biathlon National Championships in Lake Placid went well.
Great sponsorships kept the effort solvent.
Bill Koch Youth Ski League – Eric Hamilton reported that there is
discussion amongst club leaders about emphasis on competition with in
the program. The consensus is that if a child is competing at the
Mid-Atlantic Bill Koch Festival (s)he should have some experience
competing on an interclub level. Rochester will be submitting a bid for
the 2007 Mid-Atlantic Bill Koch Festival the weekend before the Empire
State Games. Old Forge will be inviting New York and New England Bill
Kochers to a summer outing including a ‘kayak for Kochers’ tentatively
set for August 9, 2005. The activity will wrap up before 3:30 pm so
participants can receive a second day at WaterWorld for no additional
cost. Eric Hamilton moved; Dan Karig second that we continue the first
membership free of charge for a first time Bill Koch membership,
carried. Eric Hamilton moved; Ruth Hayes second that NYSSRA purchase
reusable cloth bibs 76 through 150 for the Mid-Atlantic Bill Koch
Festival, carried.
Fund Raising – No report although Darwin Roosa noted that there are
still NYSSRA tee shirts available.
Newsletter – Dan Karig said that he really appreciates the work
everyone does for the newsletter. The network of writers makes the
publication more reflective of the whole membership. Jan Sibilia
volunteered to coordinate contributions from scholastic members. The
next deadline is October 15. Discussion followed about screening
materials that might not reflect positively on the organization or it’s
local clubs. Dan Karig said that the only materials that he will not
screen or edit are letters to the editor.
Competition Manual – Rick Costanza noted that John Nabors is
preparing the Manual this year. The executive committee had authorized
him to purchase publishing software during the summer. Rick also
encouraged committee chairs to get their materials into John Nabors as
soon as possible.
Scheduling – Rick Costanza pointed out the changes in dates at the
date end of the coming season: Mid A Bill Koch Festival to February 19
and 20 and the NYSSRA Championships to March 5 and 6. He also pointed
out that the tentative schedule for the 2005/2006 season was on the
board (copy attached).
Liability Insurance – The committee prepared and submitted the
application for renewal of our liability insurance. Discussion followed
centered around the frustrations with only one company that will
underwrite insurance for athletic organizations.
Club System – Jan Sibilia reported that the committee recommends a
system that provides opportunities for skiers to participate, learn and
grow while enhancing year round participation in New York Nordic ski
sports. The $40 fee for Club Affiliation should remain the same. The
committee will create a Club Registration Form, add a section to NYSSRA
- Nordic web site with information on clubs, develop brochure for
distribution, and adopt a system of criteria for a Presidential
Citation.
Tug Hill Tourathon – Noting that this is the 25th
anniversary of the Tourathon Clara Bingham moved; Dan Karig second that
NYSSRA sponsor a set of awards for the event. Discussion followed.
Motion withdrawn.
Nominating Committee – Dan Karig presented the Committee’s slate of
officers: for President, Jan Sibilia; for Vice President, Chris Rose;
for second V. P., Jim Kobak; for Treasurer, Lee Mahood; for Secretary,
Eric Hamilton. Clara Bingham moved, Dan Karig second that the secretary
cast one vote for all unopposed candidates, carried. Vote so cast. Ruth
Hayes pointed out that this is the first time a female has been elected
president of the organization.
OLD BUSINESS
501(c)(3) – Bill Lilly moved, Dan Karig second that we authorize $500
for the IRS user fee for filing the application for not-for-profit
status, carried.
Coaches Development – Jan Sibilia noted that there will be a
roundtable discussion for coaches at the Lapland Lake Clinic the
Saturday afternoon, September 25. Anyone is welcome: you don’t have to
attend any of the rest of the clinic. She also would like to establish a
working group to interact with high school coaches.
Luggage Tags – Dan Karig reported that we could purchase luggage tags
for masters skiers for $475 plus a $35 set up fee. Lee Mahood moved we
purchase the tags; Clara Bingham second; carried.
NEW BUSINESS
Spring Meeting – The Spring meeting was set for April 24, 2005.
Adjournment – being no further business the meeting was adjourned on
a motion by Lee Mahood, second by Clara Bingham, carried.
