| Mid-Atlantic Team Set for Michigan
By Emily Cartwright
What a winter we are having! Here in Lake Placid, we haven’t had
a day off of snow since Mid December. With the great snow, has come great
racing. The Junior Olympic Qualifiers were all big successes, ending last
weekend with the Mid-Atlantic JO Championships at McCauley Mountain in
Old Forge. I was not at the Rochester or Glens Falls JOQ’s, but I can report
on Old Forge and announce the final Mid-A team.
With perfect packed powder conditions, the Polar Bear Ski Club set
beautiful tracks for easy waxing conditions. The field was large with the
race being a high school race as well as a JOQ. In the J2 girls division,
the times were close, with Vikki Finnan, Elissa Reidy, and Danielle Buczkowski,
placing 1-2-3 with times of 18:58, 19:09, and 19:15 respectively. In the
J2 boy’s race, Simon Thomas-Train of Keene Valley ate up the competition
with a time of 16:02, but it was a fight for second between Scott McClelland
and Todd Stevens with McClelland coming out on top in 2nd place with times
of 16:53 and 16:56.
The J1 girls race was smaller in numbers than usual, but still had
the strong skiers of Taylor Leach 1st 17:56, Mary Iaculli of
HFL in 2nd 18:20, and Michelle Provencher 3rd 18:26.
These 3 girls will create a strong relay team in Michigan. Sam Morse has
been almost undefeated in this year’s JOQ series in the J1 boys division.
He placed 1st again in Old Forge winning the 10k classic race
with a time of 32:18. Greg Stevens of Scotia was 2nd in 32:56
and Chad Day was 3rd in 33:27. In the OJ girl’s class, Uta Oberdoerster
edged out Michaela Beckingham by 5 seconds, with times of 18:53 and 18:58
respectively. Mark pepper won the OJ boys class with a time of 31:22. |
