JR. NATIONAL TEAM |
The Mid-Atlantic (Mid-A) District of the
United States Ski Association (USSA) is committed to developing
excellence in cross-country skiing. Mid-A will again be selecting
a team this season for competition in the Junior Olympics (JO's).
The Mid-A District is New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware,
West Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.
The 2004 Jr. Nationals will take place in LAKE PLACID, NY from March
6-14, 2004.
The Mid-A Junior Committee has developed a team selection process for
naming the JO team. Please reference the Mid-Atlantic handbook for
further information.
Qualifications for the JO 2004 Team:
- · An
athlete must be a competition licensed member of the USSA to be scored
in a JOQ; contact the USSA at PO Box 100, Park City, UT 84060
(801-649-9090, fax: 801 649 3613) regarding membership in the
USSA. It is the athlete's responsibility to have her/his USSA
license and competition number in place before the first Junior
Qualifier.
- · Up
to 42 skiers will be chosen.
- · Complete
4 out of 6 of the JO qualifying races.
- · 4
races will be scored as follows: your time in each race is calculated
as a % back of the average top 3 skiers in your age group. OJ skiers
are scored for % back with J1 skiers.
- · Your
4 races must have an average of 12% back or better.
- · There
is force majeur and some Mid-A committee discretion to make exceptions
to these qualifying standards.
Alternate ways
to qualify for 2004 Mid-A JO team:
- 1. Automatic
qualification for any skier who finishes in top 40 for Junior skiers at
the 2004 US Nationals in Rumford, Maine.
- 2. Automatic
qualification from Nordic Combined results at North Americans (TBD by
Luke Bodensteiner and USSA committee)
- 3. College
skiers may qualify by any of the listed methods for all skiers, or by
the following "special" methods:
a) Qualify for NCAA championships.
b) Qualify for the NENSA Junior Olympic Team.
c) Have
Qualified for Mid-A previously and be racing on their college carnival
team with at least two carnival
finishes
in the top 50.
d) USSA
rule: any college skier who has not previously skied for Mid-A needs to
submit a letter of intent by
December
21st stating that he or she wishes to compete for Mid-A at Jo’s this
year.
Scholarship funds for JO trip: (IF there is money donated to the Mid-A
team, a policy has been set for allocation of funds. Please refer to
the Mid-Atlantic Handbook for details.)
- All
athletes who obtained All American Status at the previous years JO’s
and will be competing in JO’s in the consecutive year will receive up
to 25% of the cost of the JO trip.
- If 25% of
the trip cost is paid to those athletes and there is money remaining,
it will go to a scholarship fund. Any athlete competing in JO’s
who has a need for a price break may apply for this scholarship. Send a
letter, stating name, address info, brief skiing history, and reason

named immediately following the final Mid-A JOQ in Old Forge. For

EASTERN HIGH SCHOOL
CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM
The Eastern High School Championships is an annual event that
highlights the end of the ski season with competitive racing against
all the top high school skiers in the East. The 2004 Eastern High
School Championships will be held in Rumford, ME on March 12-14,
2004. The Mid-A Junior Committee has developed qualifying
standards for the Eastern HS Championships New York Team.
Up to 40 spots (20 male/20 female) are available for NY skiers. You are
eligible for the NY EHSC Team if you meet any ONE of the following:
1. Qualified for the 2003 or 2004 Mid-A Jr. Olympic Team
2. Placed Top 20 at the 2003 or 2004 NY High School State Meet
3. Placed Top 10 in the scholastic division of 2004 Empire State
Games
Those not meeting qualifying criteria, but wish to compete, may
petition the Mid-A committee. All competitors in EHSC must be in
high school, grades 9-12.
This year, EHSC
conflicts with JO Nationals. We do not have a trip leader for EHSC at
