MID-ATLANTIC CROSS COUNTRY JR. NATIONAL TEAM
The Mid-Atlantic (Mid-A) District of the United States Ski Association (USSA) is committed to developing excellence in cross-country skiing.  Mid-A will again be selecting a team this season for competition in the Junior Olympics (JO's).  The Mid-A District is New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, West Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.
The 2004 Jr. Nationals will take place in LAKE PLACID, NY from March 6-14, 2004.

The Mid-A Junior Committee has developed a team selection process for naming the JO team. Please reference the Mid-Atlantic handbook for further information.
Qualifications for the JO 2004 Team:
  • · An athlete must be a competition licensed member of the USSA to be scored in a JOQ; contact the USSA at PO Box 100, Park City, UT 84060 (801-649-9090, fax: 801 649 3613) regarding membership in the USSA.  It is the athlete's responsibility to have her/his USSA license and competition number in place before the first Junior Qualifier.
  • · Up to 42 skiers will be chosen.
  • · Complete 4 out of 6 of the JO qualifying races.
  • · 4 races will be scored as follows: your time in each race is calculated as a % back of the average top 3 skiers in your age group. OJ skiers are scored for % back with J1 skiers.
  • · Your 4 races must have an average of 12% back or better.
  • · There is force majeur and some Mid-A committee discretion to make exceptions to these qualifying standards.

Alternate ways to qualify for 2004 Mid-A JO team:

  1. 1. Automatic qualification for any skier who finishes in top 40 for Junior skiers at the 2004 US Nationals in Rumford, Maine.
  2. 2. Automatic qualification from Nordic Combined results at North Americans (TBD by Luke Bodensteiner and USSA committee)
  3. 3. College skiers may qualify by any of the listed methods for all skiers, or by the following "special" methods:
                a) Qualify for NCAA championships.
                b) Qualify for the NENSA Junior Olympic Team.
                c) Have Qualified for Mid-A previously and be racing on their college carnival team with at least two carnival                     finishes in the top 50.
                d) USSA rule: any college skier who has not previously skied for Mid-A needs to submit a letter of intent by                     December 21st stating that he or she wishes to compete for Mid-A at Jo’s this year.

Scholarship funds for JO trip: (IF there is money donated to the Mid-A team, a policy has been set for allocation of funds. Please refer to the Mid-Atlantic Handbook for details.)
  1.  All athletes who obtained All American Status at the previous years JO’s and will be competing in JO’s in the consecutive year will receive up to 25% of the cost of the JO trip.
  2.  If 25% of the trip cost is paid to those athletes and there is money remaining, it will go to a scholarship fund.  Any athlete competing in JO’s who has a need for a price break may apply for this scholarship. Send a letter, stating name, address info, brief skiing history, and reason for scholarship need. Send to the Mid-A Secretary: Julie Zimmerman, zimmerjm@yahoo.com.
The JO team will be named immediately following the final Mid-A JOQ in Old Forge.  For questions, contact the Mid-A Junior Committee Chairman Bill Brooker at PO Box 677, Old Forge, NY 13420; (315) 369-6479.
